British Red Cross launches #DontStopAt999 campaign

Find out about the new #DontStopAt999 campaign from the British Red Cross and how simple first aid actions could save your little one.

It was World First Aid Day on 10 September, which we marked by sharing lots of useful tips and information on our social media channels.

The British Red Cross also released new research that shows that up to 59% of deaths from injury may have been prevented had first aid been carried out before the arrival of the emergency medical services.

Simple first aid actions save lives

The research, commissioned by the British Red Cross and conducted by the University of Manchester, showed how there is a window of opportunity between dialling 999 and the arrival of the emergency medical services where two simple first aid actions could save someone’s life.

These are:

  1. 1. Turning someone on their side and tilting their head back to open their airway.
    2. Applying pressure to a heavy bleed to help stem the flow of blood.
  2. As a result of these findings, the British Red Cross has launched the Don’t stop at 999 campaign. The aim is to equip more people with these life-saving skills and call for more opportunities for people to learn first aid.

Would you know how to save your child in an emergency?

We’re playing our part through our Baby First Aid courses, run in partnership with the British Red Cross.

The course includes:

  • how to deal with an unresponsive baby and child (breathing or not breathing),
  • what to do if a baby or child is choking plus
  • treating burns, temperatures and meningitis.

Our two and a half hour courses are suitable for parents, expectant parents and carers of babies and young children.

They provide first aid learning for parents of babies under one, and older children up to 12 years old.

These interactive, confidence-building courses are held locally, and provide plenty of opportunity to practise techniques and ask questions.
