Did you know May is National Walking Month? Find out a bit more about the benefits of walking, and you might be inspired to join one of our Walk & Talks!
As the days get longer and hopefully brighter, there is no better time to get out in the fresh air for a walk.
Walking is good for your physical health, reducing the risk of many health conditions including heart disease, diabetes and dementia.
Going for a walk can make you feel more energetic, boost your immunity and has a positive effect on your mental health too, helping to reduce stress, anxiety and depression.
Walking is a form of low impact exercise which is suitable for everyone, needs no special equipment and it’s free! Whether you start your day with a walk or nip outside at lunchtime, adding a 30 minute walk to your daily routine will improve your mood and general health.
Getting outside for a daily walk with your children can also help to break up the day, release pent up energy and the whole family will benefit from getting some vitamin D.
It’s a great idea to make your walk a family affair, join an organised walk or persuade friends to join you.
NCT Walk and Talks are a fantastic way to connect with other parents in your local area
Outdoor group walks have been linked to significantly lower levels of depression and enhanced wellbeing, especially in those who had recently gone through a stressful life event.
NCT Walk and Talk events are a fantastic way to connect with other parents in your local area, get outdoors and chat to some friendly faces. Why not check our event finder to see where your nearest Walk & Talk is?
Or maybe you would like to volunteer host your own Walk and Talk in a local green space? Getting started is easy and you could soon be sharing the benefits of walking with new friends in your local area.
If you are looking for a running challenge this year, why not run a marathon for NCT?
We still have places left for the virtual London Marathon 2022.
The Virtual Marathon is a great way to ease into marathon running!
You can run the marathon close to home, on a route of your choice without the hassle and expense of travelling to Central London, and you have 24 hours to complete your 26.2 miles on marathon day (2nd October 2022), allowing for breaks if needed!
The entry fee is low at just £20 and we ask for a fundraising commitment of just £250 to take part.
NCT runners raise vital funds to reduce isolation and provide support for parents locally and nationally through our community groups, projects and our free-to-use Infant Feeding line.
Interested in a virtual marathon place? Pick up your running shoes and register your interest now!
As well as Walk & Talks, there are lots of opportunities to meet parents in your area. Take a look at our new event planner tool to find out what’s going on near you.
