Find out about the Five x more campaign and how you can help end the shocking disparities that black women face during pregnancy and childbirth
The Five X More campaign is raising awareness about how black women in the UK are five times more likely to die during pregnancy and childbirth.
Don’t miss your chance to join what promises to be an eye-opening and throught-provoking night.
This disparity in healthcare outcomes has existed since the 1990s but has increased in recent years.
The campaign founders, Tinuke (pictured below left) and Clo (pictured below right), will be hosting an online event on Saturday 19 September (6-9pm) with two expert panel discussions, performances and real-life stories from black women across the UK.
In 2018, the campaign was launched urging supporters to post a selfie of themselves to promote steps to support themselves as black women within the UK maternity system.
The six steps are:
1. SPEAK UP IF YOU FEEL SOMETHING ISN’T RIGHT
2. FIND AN ADVOCATE FOR YOURSELF
3. SEEK A SECOND OPINION
4. TRUST YOUR GUT FEELING
5. DO YOUR RESEARCH ON PREGNANCY AND LABOUR
6. DOCUMENT EVERYTHING
In March 2020, a petition was launched which now has 186,000 signatures urging the government to make this issue a priority. The campaign has been featured in British Vogue, and ITV news ran a feature length piece on the issue last month.
To support the campaign visit the Five x more website where you can take your selfie, sign the petition and write to you MP. And please register to attend the event on Saturday 19 September.
We all have a part to play in making sure these inequalities end.
