Recently released figures from NCT show that Glasgow Baby Cafés have helped 1,200 new mums to breastfeed over the last five years. So we’ve been celebrating…
Greater Glasgow and Clyde has three Baby Cafés, in Kirkintilloch, Govanhill and Barrhead, offering free support to local mums who want to breastfeed. The Baby Cafés have just celebrated their fifth anniversaries in the last few weeks with birthday parties for local mums and their children. We’re still celebrating our success, so please do come along to one of the groups – we’d love to welcome you.
Baby Cafés provide opportunities for pregnant women and new mums to get the social support of others in the same situation. They can also receive information about breastfeeding from NCT peer supporters and health professionals.
Many women start breastfeeding but stop early on because of a lack of information and support. Research shows that 80% of women who stop breastfeeding in the first few weeks would have liked to continue.
Donna McSwiggan, Scottish Breastfeeding Programme Manager at NCT says: ‘We’re delighted to have helped so many new mums in Glasgow to breastfeed. We set up Baby Cafés in areas where breastfeeding rates were low and these results have shown our peer supporters have had a significant impact.”
